Youth Football Equipment Checklist: Everything Your Child Needs (Ages 8–12)

Getting your young athlete ready for youth football season requires more than just showing up to practice. Having the right equipment — properly fitted and in good condition — directly impacts performance, safety, and confidence on the field.

This youth football equipment checklist covers everything a player ages 8–12 needs, from helmets to gloves, so you never miss a critical item before the season starts.

✅ Youth Football Equipment Checklist (Ages 8–12)

1. Helmet

  • NOCSAE-certified helmet (required by all sanctioned youth leagues)
  • Proper fit: two fingers max between eyebrow and helmet brim
  • All interior padding intact — no cracks or broken shell
  • Chin strap snaps securely on both sides
  • Recertified if more than 10 years old

2. Shoulder Pads

  • Correct size: tip of pad aligns with tip of shoulder
  • All straps and snaps functional
  • No cracked plastic or compressed foam
  • Position-appropriate: skill pads (lighter) for receivers, lineman pads (heavier) for linemen

3. Youth Football Gloves

  • Youth-specific sizing (YS, YM, YL) — do not use adult Small
  • Sticky silicone grip on palm and fingers
  • Secure wrist closure (hook-and-loop strap)
  • No torn seams or peeling grip material
  • Confirm correct hand measurement before purchasing (measure around widest part of palm)

📏 Use our Youth Football Gloves Sizing Guide to measure your child’s hand and find the exact right size.

4. Pants and Integrated Pads

  • Football pants with integrated or removable pads (hip, tailbone, thigh, knee)
  • All pad pockets intact — no missing or shifted pads
  • Proper length: bottom of pants at or just below the knee
  • League-approved color (check with your league before purchasing)

5. Mouth Guard

  • Custom-fitted or boil-and-bite mouth guard
  • Covers upper teeth completely
  • Not cracked, chipped, or discolored
  • League rules: most require bright color (not clear or white) for visibility

6. Cleats

  • Molded rubber cleats (required in most youth leagues — no metal cleats)
  • Proper fit: 1/4 inch of space at the toe
  • Ankle support: mid-cut preferred for young athletes
  • Cleats not worn down or missing

7. Jersey and Undershirt

  • League-issued or approved jersey (check numbering rules by position)
  • Compression undershirt for temperature regulation and muscle support
  • No loose fabric that can get caught in pads

8. Athletic Cup and Supporter

  • Hard-shell athletic cup with compression shorts or supporter
  • Correct youth sizing for comfort and protection
  • Recommended for all contact positions

9. Neck Roll / Collar (Optional but Recommended)

  • Foam neck roll attaches to shoulder pads
  • Reduces lateral neck movement during contact
  • Recommended for linemen and linebackers

10. Water Bottle and Gear Bag

  • Personal labeled water bottle (minimum 32oz for practices)
  • Large equipment bag with ventilation — helmets and shoulder pads need airflow to prevent odor and bacteria
  • Small towel for wiping gloves and hands during games
